Finance staff from AMANET, CSRS, CNRFP, IHI, KEMRI, REACH, IVCC, LSTM and STPH at a training course in FP7 financing and project reporting, Liverpool, UK 9-12 May 2011

Administration and financial management is a vital but often overlooked aspect of successful research projects. AvecNet recognises the importance of excellent collaboration to build capacity in this critical aspect of research implementation. We therefore invited AvecNet partners to select relevant finance and administrative staff to attend a tailor made training course at LSTM. The training was aimed at partners who have never received FP7 European Commission funding before.

The course covered the FP7 financing mechanism, reporting requirements and using the EU participant’s web portal. The course was delivered in English but we were supported by two students who worked with Francophone colleagues to translate the information. It provided an excellent opportunity to share experiences and get to know each other. We are already reaping the benefits of this opportunity through excellent inter personal relationships and a high standard of internal reporting.

The AvecNet Kick Off Meeting was held at the White Sands Hotel, Dar es Salaam Tanzania on 14-17 March 2011. The meeting brought together project scientists and PhD candidates from Burkina Faso, France, Greece, Italy, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Malawi, Switzerland, Tanzania and the UK.  Members of our external technical advisory group joined us from the USA and a representative of our funder, the EU, joined us from Belgium. During the meeting AvecNet collaborators were able to gain an understanding of all elements of the project and get to know each other. They were tasked with carrying out detailed planning for each of the work packages and on ensuring that AvecNet has a strong translational focus.

The meeting was followed by two days of training sessions on social research methods and quantitative analysis for project scientists, images from the meeting can be found on our Gallery page.
